Spring is in the air and summer is already coming in hot as they say. And while we may not be ‘beach-body-ready,’ we have a surprisingly simple idea that will not only help you burn some calories, but give you an energy boost and contribute to a healthier you for summer (and beyond.)

Let’s say you are an average human specimen, weighing approx. 160 pounds and (conservatively) working a 40+ hours each week at a desk, behind a counter, at a workbench or running between jobs in the field. Here’s food for thought; stand up! Hear us out, standing (instead of sitting) will burn an extra 1600 - 2000 calories a week! That is a normal able-bodied person’s daily caloric intake. That’s like an extra-large meal! But we digress….

We’ve all heard that sitting is the new sugar or worse the new cigarettes. We don’t want to scare you, but studies show that sitting for too long can lead to obesity, increased blood pressure, cholesterol and even cardiovascular and cancer! That is scary.

Yet, the simple act of standing more and sitting less will make a difference, for your waistline and lifeline! It is a relatively effortless way for most of us to drop a few extra pounds or at minimum burn a few calories. But more importantly, standing increases circulation, boosts energy, and yes, can contribute to weight loss. That’s a win win.

It’s not difficult to do, but we do suggest you ease into the standing lifestyle. Start small…stand for a few minutes, and then add a few more minutes of standing every day, and you will see results. For example, set a reminder to stand for 15 minutes of every hour and then ‘work’ to increase that time. The goal is to not ‘sit’ for more than 4 hours during an eight-hour work day.

There are many standing desks on the market, or make your own with a few stacked books (DIY style). As you start to stand more….you may notice the familiar ‘ache’ in your feet, knees or back. That is where we come in. We (WellnessMats) are ergonomically engineered to provide maximum comfort, support, relief and overall well being while you stand. Our anti-fatigue mats do just that – decrease fatigue, increase energy and circulation. We make standing for long periods as comfortable. We are the yin to the desks yang!

So consider taking a stand - you won’t regret it. (and make sure to have the proper support underfoot!)
